There has been much comments published regarding this monumental piece of architecture ever since it opens its doors to public few months ago. For those who has little knowledge in architecture would dislike this building and criticize its usage of materials and weird-looking form. Well for me, this monumental piece of architecture evokes different emotions and feelings in me.
The architect was given a piece of land which lies on a major node in Orchard Road and this, in fact, evokes the importance of creating an iconic piece of architecture. To be truthful, this ain't easy. The architect has to create a building that not only would last for 5 years but much more decades ahead. He has to analyze, study and predict what the future Orchard road would be. Therefore, he HAS the power to change, create and start a new trend in Architecture and the urban fabric of Orchard Road. That is a huge responsibity ! Well, the organic form of ION Orchard certainly evokes a sense of celebration when one approaches it from a distant.
Well, despite all those, there's certainly several cons that I would like to express for ION. Firstly, I dislike the basement's circulation. It's a total turn off seeing all the turns that one has to go through. There is no celebration of space in every space that i go. Just rounds and rounds of shops. Definitely it would impress shopaholics but not me. On top of that, the glass architecture that the architect create is just a little too much. Lets rule out maintainance problems. Theres too much to be stated. The spaces created are just not that interesting. Like i say, it would please tourists and laymans but not the archi-eyeds. :)
